A focus group is a moderated discussion — usually 60–90 minutes, six to ten people — where a company pays to hear what real customers think before launching a product or campaign. That's why the pay is several times what a paid survey is worth: your time is scheduled, and the recruiter has a quota to fill.

Most sessions now run over video, so where you live matters far less than it used to. In-person groups still pay the most and cluster in large metros. If you'd rather see everything open to you at once, browse paid studies near you or the wider paid market research feed, which includes product tests and interviews alongside focus groups.

What paid focus groups pay, by type

One averaged range hides most of what matters. These are the formats you'll actually be offered.

FormatTypical payTimeWhat it involves
Online focus group$75–$15060–90 minSix to ten people on a video call with a moderator. The most common format now, and open to you regardless of where you live.
In-person focus group$100–$25060–120 minAt a research facility, usually with clients watching through a mirror or on a feed. Pays more than online because attendance costs you travel.
Mini-group or triad$100–$20045–90 minThree to five participants instead of ten. Each person talks far more, which is why recruiters screen harder for people who will engage.
Online bulletin board$75–$20020–30 min a day, 3–5 daysAsynchronous discussion you contribute to on your own schedule. No fixed session time, but you must post consistently to be paid in full.
Multi-session or deliberative$200–$500+Several sessions over weeksLonger-form research where the same group reconvenes. Best total payment in the category, and it depends on attending every session.
B2B or professional group$250–$1,000+60–90 minScreened purely on your job title — clinicians, IT buyers, contractors, specifiers. The best-paid research most people can access, and it turns entirely on what you do for a living.

How paid focus groups actually work

A recruiter screens you by phone or questionnaire, confirms your place, and usually re-verifies your answers when you arrive — facilities check that the person who screened is the person attending, so bring ID. Sessions frequently over-recruit and pay a standby participant to wait in case someone drops out, which is why you may be booked and then sent home with the full incentive. In-person groups often pay the same day by cash or prepaid card; online sessions are typically paid by the recruiter two to six weeks later, so ask which it will be before you attend.

Who gets selected

Recruiters work to quotas, so qualifying is about filling a gap rather than being the best participant. Two things matter more than people expect. Moderators need people who talk — a group of quiet participants produces nothing usable, so being willing to speak up is genuinely a qualification. And no-shows get blacklisted across a recruiter's whole client list, so a single missed session can quietly cost you every future invitation from that firm. If your job title is unusual or professional, say so: B2B groups pay several times consumer rates.

How to spot a scam

Legitimate recruiters never charge a fee, never ask you to buy anything, and never need money sent to release an incentive. Real groups happen at a named research facility or on a company video platform — never in a private home, a hotel room, or a car park. The standard scam is overpayment: a cheque arrives for more than the agreed amount with a request to return the difference or buy gift cards, and it bounces after you have sent real money. More on spotting research scams.

How this compares

Focus groups sit in the middle of paid research: better paid than surveys, easier to get into than clinical trials, and more scheduled than either. If you would rather not talk in a group, in-depth interviews pay more per session and are one-to-one — those sit under paid market research, along with product tests and shop-alongs. If you want research run by universities rather than brands, paid psychology studies are a separate stream that pays less but screens far less aggressively.
