What paid psychology studies pay, by type

One averaged range hides most of what matters. These are the formats you'll actually be offered.

FormatTypical payTimeWhat it involves
Online questionnaires$5–$2515–45 minAttitude, personality, and judgement measures completed from home. The most common format and the easiest to qualify for.
Lab behavioural tasks$15–$4030–90 minComputer-based memory, attention, or perception tasks run in a university lab. Usually paid hourly.
Decision-making experiments$10–$60, partly variable20–60 minEconomics and judgement studies where part of your payment depends on the choices you make during the study. That variability is the research question, not a catch.
Brain imaging studies$50–$1501–2 hoursfMRI or EEG sessions. The best-paid academic research, because scanner time is expensive and few people pass the screening.
Longitudinal and diary studies$50–$300 in totalWeeks to yearsRepeated short check-ins over a long period. Low effort each time, and the cumulative total is larger than any single session.

How paid psychology studies actually work

University research runs under ethical review: a board approves the protocol before anyone is recruited, you are given a consent form explaining what will happen and what is being measured, and you can stop at any point without giving a reason and still be paid for the part you completed. Students usually sign up through a departmental scheduling system; members of the public join lab mailing lists or registries. Payment is by cash, cheque, or gift card, and campus studies sometimes offer course credit instead — which is not the same thing and is always stated up front.

Who gets selected

Students are recruited most heavily because they are convenient, but a great deal of research specifically needs non-students — psychology has a well-known problem with over-relying on undergraduate samples, and funders increasingly push back on it. Being older, not in education, or from a background research usually misses makes you more valuable, not less. Imaging studies are the exception: metal implants, some tattoos, claustrophobia, and pregnancy rule people out regardless of anything else.

How to spot a scam

Genuine academic research names the institution and the principal investigator, provides a consent form before anything begins, and gives you an ethics board reference you can check. You are never asked to pay, and you can always withdraw. Anything describing itself as a university study while asking for bank details, a fee, or your Social Security number is not one. More on spotting research scams.

How this compares

Psychology studies pay less than commercial market research but are usually much easier to join, because they screen on who you are rather than on quotas a brand has set. They are also the only category where you can reasonably expect to be told what the study is actually about afterwards. If you want higher pay for an hour, market research is the better route; if you want research that is easy to get into and runs continuously, this is it.

Related ways to get paid

Paid Psychology Studies is one route — most people end up mixing a few. Worth a look next: paid studies at UNC, paid studies at the University of Minnesota, paid surveys, and paid studies near you.
